How to Add an External DVD Drive to a Netbook Computer
Since netbook computers do not have an internal DVD drive, it is usually a good idea to add an external DVD drive. An external DVD drive is needed in order to create backup DVD’s of the operating system that is installed on the netbook. A DVD player also makes installation of programs and hardware drivers that you already have DVD for much easier. Music CDs, movie DVDs, and photo CD are all much more accessible by a netbook computer, if you have an external DVD drive. This article will show you how to add and external DVD drive to your netbook computer.
Instructions
1
Find an external DVD drive for your netbook. There are two basic types of external DVD drives that will work with a netbook, a lightweight portable DVD drive or a standard external DVD drive. The lightweight, portable DVD drive has the advantage of being USB-powered. This means that the DVD drive will not have to be plugged into a wall outlet. Instead the drive comes with two USB plugs. The first USB draws 5 volts from the netbook and the second USB transfers data to and from the netbook to the DVD drive. The lightweight drive typically has all the same features as a standard drive such as lightscribe, DVD-RW, etc.

The standard DVD drive is larger and will be required to be plugged into a wall outlet. This drive has the advantage of being more durable. Standard DVD drives have been out a while now, and they typically score high for compatability with buring media and being able to read most types of DVD and CD formatting. This durability comes at a slightly higher price and with less portability.
2
Power up your netbook. Allow the Windows operating system to fully load before plugging in the DVD drive.
3
Plug your new DVD drive into the netbook computer. The drive in the photo is a lightweight portable drive so both USB plugs need to be connected to the netbook. Since the extra USB plug is drawing 5 volts from the netbook, the battery will last slightly less time than without the DVD drive.
When a dialog box opens indicating that the computer is installing a DVD drive, you can select a check box if you want the DVD to autoplay in the future when you insert a DVD. Make the selection now to autoplay or close the dialog box without selecting DVD autoplay. If you change your mind later, you can go to the control panel and change the autoplay setting later.
5
Open the DVD drive and insert DVDs or CD that are needed for your netbook to install programs or drivers for other external devices. Make sure you use the DVD burner in the drive to backup your operating system.

Under a Blood Red Sky [Vinyl] $19.39 There seem to be two major camps of U2 fans now: Those who dig the early albums (good and sensible people), and those who only like the ones from the ’90s, putting everything previous down as “classic rock.” But U2 only became a classic rock sort of band in 1984, with The Unforgettable Fire. The real early stuff, from ’80 to ’83, still comes off as edgy–and it’s comparatively ignored. Here’s a sa… |
